Introduction and objectives:

Steroids are highly prescribed in internal medicine. Monitoring their side effects like steroid induced diabetes is very important. Our aim is to study the metabolic complications of steroid induced diabetes and their etiologies.

Methods:

It’s a retrospective study of patients diagnosed steroid induced diabetes in an internal medicine department followed from January 2014 to february 2015

Results:

It’s about 30 cases of steroid induced diabetes mellitus with a mean age of 51 years and sex ratio F/M=2. The mean body mass index was 22.4 kg/m2. Steroid induced diabetes was discovered averagely within 7 months. During follow up 65% of patients had hyperglycemia with mean glycosylated hemoglobin of 14.25%. 25% had ketosis and 10% ketoacidosis. These metabolic complications were due to infection in 14% cases, inadequate food intake and therapeutic non observance in 60% cases and high doses of steroids in 26% cases. Diabetes was managed with only diet and life style advice in 8%, oral anti diabetics in 42% and definitive insulin therapy in half patients.

Discussion:

Metabolic complications of steroid induced diabetes are especially hyperglycemia due to inadequate food intake and non observance showing the importance of a good dietary advice when prescribing steroids.
